From childhood I was afflicted by several diseases
From childhood I was afflicted by several diseases. My father kept trying to get doctors to cure me, but finally one of them told him he could not do me any good, and that I would waste away and die. I was under one doctor's care for over ten months, but I never felt strong, nor free from pain. During many years I suffered a great deal with my lungs and heart. I traveled, thinking that change of climate and water would help me, but I was brought home to die. Several friends came to see me, and among them was one who had recently been healed through Christian Science. She told me about Christian Science, and finally brought me "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, saying that it would do me good to read it. Appreciating her kindness, I decided to read the book to please her. I was too weak to hold it, and had it propped up on a pillow. At first I could not understand the meaning of many passages, but gradually I found comfort in its words and began to feel free from pain. I soon gained strength enough to leave my bed, and finding so much help from the reading of this wonderful book I desired to investigate Christian Science more fully. I began to correspond with my friend's practitioner and received a great deal of information, and soon purchased a copy of Science and Health for myself.
About this time my husband was afflicted with heart and stomach disease, also rupture, and I encouraged him to take Christian Science treatment. He took absent treatment for about one week and was healed. After this he wished me to have absent treatment, which I did for two weeks, and was very much benefited thereby. He finally decided to take me to Kansas City, where I could live with Christian Scientists and get a good understanding of the Science. During this visit I had several weeks' treatment and experienced a complete change. Before this time I could not stand damp weather without suffering, but this tendency was soon overcome and I could go to the services on Sunday and Wednesday in any kind of weather. In about three months I was able to return to my home, and commenced housekeeping, something I had not been able to do for several years. Living among the mountains, I soon carried out a long-cherished desire and took several trips on foot, when heretofore my heart seemed to give me much trouble even if I walked only a short distance.
In the beginning of my acquaintance with Christian Science I had been afraid it might take me away from God, but now I feel that in it I have truly found Him, and the help for which I had been looking through many years. I cannot express or explain the peace and harmony that have come to me and mine. My desire to become a member of The Mother Church in Boston was very great, and I was indeed happy when my own and my husband's applications were accepted. I cannot enumerate the demonstrations of Truth's power which we have had since we came into Christian Science, for they are so many. I wish to thank Mrs. Eddy for leading us into the truth by her wonderful book, which has done so much to help me to understand God. I am thankful that my husband came into Christian Science, as we can now work hand in hand for this great Cause.—Amelia A. Swaty, Mena, Ark.
