In the spring of 1900 I was given a Christian Science Journal containing a lecture. I did not read it then, as I was skeptical of religion, and especially of Christian Science, smiling many a time at what I then thought to be queer ideas, and saying what many say before they know anything about it. A short time afterward, however, while at home ill, I picked up the Journal and read the lecture through without stopping, and as I read my thoughts recurred to the sayings of Jesus which I had learned in Sunday School fifteen years before. Every line seemed to be in perfect accord with the New Testament teaching, and when I opened the Bible that night, for the first time in years, I turned to the Gospel of Matthew and read every chapter. When I closed the Bible I said to myself, "I feel as if I would be well enough to go to work in the morning." My thought was so uplifted that I felt almost relieved from my aches and pains. I took only one dose of medicine while sick, and after reading the Journal and the Bible I did not take any more, nor have I ever touched material remedies from that day to this, although the next morning I was feeling as badly as ever; but by studying the lecture in connection with the Bible I was able to return to the office the following day.

For months before this time I had suffered a great deal from stomach trouble and nervousness and was taking medicine for relief, but without benefit. After gaining some light in Christian Science, I looked in the Journal and got the name of a practitioner, and wrote him for treatment. I was healed of these troubles almost instantly, as the day after asking for treatment, while walking with the friend who gave me the Journal, I realized my freedom from both stomach trouble and nervousness. The latter has never returned, and while my stomach has seemingly got out of order two or three times since I was healed, I have always been able to meet it promptly myself or by asking for treatment. As far back as I can remember I had trouble with my heart, and when about twelve years old one of the leading physicians of this city, who examined me, told my parents that I had organic heart disease and was liable to die at any moment, and that I must not play base ball or indulge in any kind of sport that would excite or exert me. To me this was like a death sentence, and caused me to mope for years. When I began studying Christian Science, however, the word of God through this Science healed me of this disease, also of acute lung trouble, from which I suffered for hours at a time, so that it was impossible to get a long breath. Just before coming into Christian Science one of the best known surgeons in this section informed me that if I did not keep up his treatment for an organic trouble, in two years I would have to undergo a serious and painful operation. Nearly six years have elapsed since this dictum was pronounced by the surgeon, and three and a half years since the expiration of the limit for the operation, without any need whatever for the same.

Christian Science has not only healed me of physical infirmities, but has been the means of making me a better man morally. It does heal the sick, notwithstanding all that may be said to the contrary by the critics and adversaries of this Science. For further proof, I might add that all the laws of material medica, regarding diet, etc., were put to naught when I was stricken with a fever two years ago, as I ate whatever my appetite called for, including almost half a basket of grapes in one day. It was a very stubborn case of fever, but I was away from work only one week, although I felt badly for three or four weeks. This was during the month of August, and as I was to accept another position on the first of September, I took up my new duties promptly and toiled from twelve to sixteen hours a day, including Sunday, for over a month, getting stronger and better all the time under Christian Science treatment.
