In years gone by, while living almost entirely in the...

In years gone by, while living almost entirely in the material senses, with only occasional glimpses of what God's child should be, I have often wished I could have a large inheritance coming to me from England, where my ancestors lived, and immediately I would plan many things,—always in the material,—all things craved by the physical senses. This dream was never realized; it came to naught as do all other merely mortal dreams; but at last I found in Christian Science that I had been looking in the wrong way for happiness. I was expecting satisfaction through personality and materiality, instead of looking to God and seeking the "spiritual sense of possession," as one of our good writers has said. Through this teaching I learned that a vast inheritance from the only true Father had indeed been waiting for me always; that I had but to claim it in love and obedience, and it would bring me joy unspeakable, and as I realized this truth no words can tell my thankfulness. It was the "inner harmony" I needed, and it can come only through the knowledge that God alone satisfies. He is our only necessity, because He has our treasure and we have "every good and perfect gift" as we abide in Him.

Now I am rich indeed! And each day unfolds greater possibilities. With the true riches all is harmony, peace, and love; while material riches, so called, often bring regret and disappointment. The understanding of the Lord's Prayer which I have gained from Science and Health is in itself a mine of wealth. I used to feel so blind and uncertain, and feared to say, "Thy will be done," thinking that His will might include suffering, to make me good; but now I know the Father only as Love, and I gladly say, "Thy will be done," understanding that it is for my highest good alway.

I realize that I have inherited only love from "our Father," therefore I have only love to give. Mrs. Eddy has my sincere love and gratitude for her teaching, which redeems us from materiality and impels us to walk in the Christ-way that leads to God. As I have had to deal with doubting ones, I can appreciate in a small degree what patience and love she has had in endeavoring to inspire in others this faith in God. I thank those who compile the Lesson-Sermons and all the writers for the Sentinel and Journal. Each issue brings messages of Truth which meet my need. The Lessons are daily food, "the bread that cometh down from heaven." I rejoice to know that this truth is reaching all over the world, as Jesus promised when he said, "But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me ... unto the uttermost part of the earth."
