TESTIMONIES
During my travels I have come in contact with hundreds of Scientists, and some of these have spoken to me of how difficult it is for them to give testimony at the Wednesday evening meetings. Perhaps two of my own experiences may prove helpful to such in carrying out the Master's command, "Freely ye have received, freely give." After my healing, about four years ago, I felt a great sense of joy and gratitude, yet when I desired to express it, it seemed impossible, and becoming discouraged, I gave up the attempt. However, "through the wholesome chastisements of Love" (Science and Health, p. 323), I was led to overcome this error.
I had for years experienced a throat difficulty nearly every spring. At about the usual time this trouble appeared, and in spite of my own Science work and help from a practitioner, I seemed to grow worse. Wednesday evening came, and I went to church, although feeling so miserable that I would have much preferred remaining at my hotel. As the testimonies were being given I was seized with an irresistible impulse to tell what Truth had done for me, and without waiting to think what I would say or how I would say it, I rose to my feet, which act alone is two thirds the battle. I gave my testimony, sat down, and to my surprise found the throat trouble had entirely disappeared—I had been instantly healed through publicly acknowledging what Christian Science had already done for me. My cup had been full to running over, and yet I had hesitated to give from it. This done, however, there was plenty of room to receive more and I received it. This lesson was learned, but still another awaited me.
Shortly afterwards I spoke again, and this time I had such a sense of self-condemnation. It had been my earnest desire to say something helpful, yet I felt that I had not done so, but had simply wasted an opportunity. A year elapsed, and upon my return to this same city, a lady who remembered me came and told me how helpful that very testimony had been to her upon several occasions. Here was another lesson unfolded; viz., that the "word of Truth" shall not return unto us void. If our motive is right, God will bless the words we speak and make them fruitful.
