SACRED PRECINCTS NOT SAFE
The Independent Voter
Even the sacred precincts of the church are not safe from the ravages of the money-grabber. That most remarkably religious and thoroughly intellectual woman, Mrs. Mary Baker G. Eddy, has succeeded by her tact and energy and literary ability in acquiring considerable property. She is advancing in years, and as every one who has heard or read of her knows, she is devoted to the Church that she has been instrumental in propagating. Relatives who have greater love for gain than for the spread of any religious truth, have made an assault upon her intelligence and general ability in order to prevent her from devoting too much of her property to the Church she has built up, which would deprive them of a greater share of the spoils when she came to the limit of her years. No other reason can be offered for their action. What business could it possibly be of theirs what became of her acquirements, except that being related to her they might succeed in "getting something for nothing."
It is hoped that the courts will formally wind the matter up by sustaining Mrs. Eddy in her property rights, as well as her intellectual standing. Such minds are rare as that possessed by Mrs. Mary Baker G. Eddy. She is the Founder of the Christian Science cult. Its value as a science may be and is questioned by many, but there is one view of it at least that should not be overlooked; that is, the people who compose the membership are not those in any community who are inclined to pursue evil practices; on the contrary, they are recognized as good examples of the socially pure. Why, then, cast a stone in the way of this or any other cult that has a tendency to create in man a thirst for higher things?
