GOV. HOKE SMITH TAKES OATH OF OFFICE
The Atlanta Georgian and News
[We gladly publish the following excerpts from the lengthy notice in The Atlanta Georgian and News of the ceremonies which attended the inauguration of the Hon. Hoke Smith, cousin of our revered Leader, as governor of the State of Georgia. The new governor has a record which justly entitles him to the respect and confidence of those who have elected him to this high office.—Editor Sentinel.]
Hoke Smith is governor of Georgia. Two years to the day from his speech opening one of the most memorable campaigns in the history of the State, he was inaugurated the State's chief executive.
In one grand triumphal march through a solid line of cheering thousands, Hoke Smith journeyed through the streets of Atlanta Saturday to the capitol, where he was formally inducted into office. Never before has a governorelect of of Georgia been given such an ovation, and if there was any doubt whatever as to his popularity, that doubt was fully dissipated by the scenes which marked that triumphal journey to the State capitol. On all sides he was cheered and cheered again. Old men and young men shouted themselves hoarse, and not satisfied with once seeing the man who was made the chief executive by one of the greatest popular landslides in the country, they rushed ahead and cheered him when again he passed. The sidewalks were packed with an enthusiastic multitude. Traffic was blocked and the windows of office buildings were dotted with thousands who waited in expectation for the governor's carriage to pass.
