I was brought up by strict parents, both of whom were members of an orthodox church, and was required to attend church and Sunday School during all my boyhood days. As I grew older I gave the subject of religion a good deal of serious thought, and held many conferences with various ministers and prominent church members; all of which only tended to estrange me from the so-called Christian religion. There were very many points, vital ones it seemed to me, that no one could explain or make plain to me. The only answer I could get was, "If God had intended us to understand this, He would have made it plain. We must leave it to God," etc. I was not satisfied with mysteries and a blind belief, consequently, soon after becoming of age I eschewed the whole subject, cast aside the Bible and discontinued attending church. I simply settled down to the "belief" that nobody knew any more about God that I did, and that I would lead a pretty fair life and leave the result to God. I lived on in that way for some twenty-five years, but was not satisfied. In 1900 I dropped into the Christian Science Reading Rooms on some secular business. I was very cordially greeted, and at once made to feel welcome. After my business was finished the subject of Christian Science was very naturally spoken of; I was curiously interested and our talk occupied an hour's time, I think. I was cordially invited to call again. I accepted the invitation, and the more I investigated the more I was impressed with Christian Science. I attended a number of services, all of which appealed to me.

About this time I located temporarily in Poughkeepsie, N. Y., where I remained about two months. During my stay there I regularly attended the Christian Science services. Soon after reaching Poughkeepsie I slipped on the ice and injured my knee very badly, and after a sleepless night I was treated in Christian Science and received immediate relief.

Since returning to Bridgeport I have given Christian Science much study and attention, and have attended the services regularly, as I enjoy them and get much good from them. At the age of seventeen I was troubled with a rectal disease, and since then, until about three years ago, had not been free from it. My father, who was considered a good doctor, attended me in the years that I was at home, and after leaving home I had treatment of another physician. From both I obtained relief, but no cure. During the summer of 1902 I went cruising on Long Island Sound, and two days before our intended return I was attacked more severely than ever before by my old trouble. On reaching home, I at once applied to a Christian Science practitioner for treatment, and obtained instant relief and a permanent cure. I have not had the slightest return of the trouble. About a year ago I was instantly cured of a very severe toothache, by an absent treatment, also of the results of a severe injury from a fall.
