LETTERS TO OUR LEADER
Oakland, Cal., July 27, 1906.
Mrs. Mary Baker G. Eddy,
Pleasant View, Concord, N. H.
Our Dear Leader:—A year and a half ago I was one of the most miserable of human beings. I had been ill for a number of years, and had undergone ten operations, two of which were capital. I felt so ill and depressed all the time that I had just about made up my mind to end it all. A friend of mine wished me to try Christian Science. Some ten years or more ago I had gone to a Christian Science practitioner and taken one treatment, but I did not like some of her statements, and so dropped it and never gave it any more thought. I told this to my friend, and she said, "Well, never mind, you just try it for a week to please me." I promised I would, and the next day I saw the practitioner, Mr. Davis A. Woodward, 310 Scott Street, San Francisco. I told him my numerous troubles and closed my remarks by telling him quite frankly that I came to him simply because I had promised a friend of mine to do so; that I had no faith in Christian Science, and did not believe in it, but was there for a week's treatment, and if he had any faith to go on and see what he could do. He looked at me calmly and lovingly and said, "I know your troubles seem real to you, but I also know their unreality." I took four treatments and was healed of a trouble from which the doctors had told me I never need expect to be perfectly free. I had promised I would not take any medicine while I was taking treatment, and it was the hardest promise I ever tried to keep. The night before I was healed I got up three times to take some medicine, but three times I went back to bed and said, "No, I won't yet." Finally, I felt I would certainly go crazy or die, and I said, "Well, I will die truthful and keep my promise;" and the first thing I knew it was morning. I awoke free from pain and soon realized that I was healed. I was free from the ailment for four months, but feared it would come back, and so it did. I immediately went to a practitioner and took a week's treatment, and from that time I have never had any more trouble from it and am healed.
