When only a child I had rebelled against the belief that God sent all sorts of affliction and misery on His children, that they might be purified and learn to love Him. To me it seemed a poor way to bring about such a result, and I groped in the darkness of despair until October, 1901, when Christian Science was brought to me. I was then suffering, for the third time, with a serious malady, and the attending physician—one of the best in St. Louis—said I had only one chance in a hundred for recovery. Arrangements were made to remove me to the hospital for an operation. At four o'clock that afternoon a friend, who was Christian Scientist, called to see me as she was returning from church, and as soon as she came in I asked if she could heal me. She said, "God will heal your, if you are ready for it." I expressed my willingness to have all material means—medicine, poultices, etc.—thrown away. With the first treatment I experienced relief, and slept for the first time in over thirty-six hours, and on the following evening, Monday, I was dressed and down to dinner. I was able to be out from that time and have never had even a symptom of the trouble from that day to this, whereas before I had lived in constant dread of it. I have experienced to the fullest extent the healing power of divine Love, for no matter what the seeming conditions have been, they have been met through Christian Science. For all these blessings, and many others too numerous to mention here, I am more than grateful to God, and to our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, for this blessed truth.
