According to the Century Dictionary, science is defined as, "Knowledge; comprehension or understanding of facts or principles. Knowledge gained by systematic observation, experiment, and reasoning; knowledge co-ordinated, arranged, and systematized; also, the prosecution of truth as thus known."
From the viewpoint of the Christian Scientist there exists no incompatibility between Christianity and Science, from the fact that to be Christian in all that it means, necessarily includes actual knowledge and "comprehension or understanding of facts or principles" relative to the teachings of Jesus Christ. It includes knowledge and understanding of God, gained by "systematic observation, experiment, and reasoning" and the "prosecution" of ascertained truths relative to God, man, and the universe, as revealed in Scripture. It is therefore seen that between Christianity and Science there exists a unity, in that the one unfolds the completeness and practicability of the other. The teachings of Jesus Christ were clear, concise, reasonable, and demonstrable expositions of Truth; therefore scientific, and consequently superior to speculative hypotheses. If the universally accepted definition of Christianity fails to recognize this correlation, it is because of the incompleteness of the definition and not because of the incompleteness of the definition and not because of any lack of correlation in the teachings.
Science necessarily deals with things which are, and the question then to be determined is, What is it that constitutes reality, the spiritual or the material? The materialist answers, "The material," and the Christian Scientist says, "The spiritual," and this statement from the Christian Scientist has of recent years been accepted and emphasized by many of the prominent natural scientists.
