It is over three years since I began to investigate Christian Science, and this is the first time that I have ever written anything concerning my healing through its agency. For about five years prior to the time that I became interested in Christian Science, I was greatly troubled with indigestion and bowel trouble of more or less severity. This trouble I tried to cure by all kinds of medicines, but with no lasting benefit. During five years I had two attacks of typhoid fever, and according to medical opinion my chronic ill health was due to these attacks, and I kept getting worse all the time. More ailments were added to the case, until I finally could boast of dyspepsia, chronic appendicitis, and bowel trouble, also tuberculosis of the bones. Life was becoming more gloomy to me every day, and I had very little hope of ever being well again. I had taken so much medicine and it afforded so little relief that I had practically lost all confidence in it.
As we had an old friend who was a living example of what Christian Science could do we thought much about trying it, but I was very much prejudiced against it. However, we decided to give it a trial. As the doctors had given me but very little hope of being any better I was ready to try anything. We secured a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and the services of a practitioner in a neighboring city.
For many months previous to this time, which was about February, 1902, I had not eaten a meal which did not distress me. The first change we noticed after beginning treatment in Christian Science was that I could eat any thing and everything without any suffering whatever. This was indeed a blessing and how thankful I was to God and to Christian Science, that through Mrs. Eddy's book I had at last found the way to recovery. During the first few weeks I studied the text-book a great part of the time and was much surprised to find therein statements that I could see were facts almost as soon as I had read them. At the end of a month's time the stomach and bowel trouble had all gone, and all that was left was a large swelling on the under side of left leg near the thigh. It was about a year and a half before this was entirely healed.
