About three years ago I was led to accept the position of industrial teacher at a hospital for the insane, at which time I knew but little of Christian Science and was also ignorant of the mental perils (I can think of no other word strong enough) which lay in my pathway. I soon found myself battling against conditions which I but vaguely comprehended, for though the medical faculty were very hostile to Christian Science, or to their concept of it, very little was openly expressed by them. Being isolated from human help. I was forced to turn continually to the Bible, to Science and Health and Mrs. Eddy's other works, also to the Sentinel and Journal, and from them received great inspiration.
By committing to memory passages from the Bible and Science and Health each morning before leaving my room, my troubled sense gave place to a heavenly harmony which prepared me for the day's work. As my work led me through long halls and required the frequent locking and unlocking of doors, these moments gave opportunity for repeating, many times over, the passages learned in the morning, and I realized that God "fills all space" (Science and Health, p. 331), also David's words, "Be strong and of good courage, fear not, nor be dismayed: for the Lord God, even my God, will be with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee."
I look back over this period with great gratitude and renewed courage, convinced that there can be no inharmony too great to be overcome with the truth, and I cannot speak too strongly concerning the benefit received from committing to memory passages from the Bible and Science and Health. It was at this time that I was enabled, with a little help, to overcome cracked and bleeding chapped hands. It was not for physical healing that I came to Christian Science, but to rid myself of the demon of incessant worry which had become a lifelong habit, but with the understanding gained from the study of our text-book I could no longer find any occasion for worry. Through the daily use of the Bible Lessons from the Quarterly, it has become to me the living Word and the Christ an ever-present "Comforter."
