When I first experienced the healing benefits of Christian Science,...
When I first experienced the healing benefits of Christian Science, the impulse to express my thanks audibly was always met by the inward reply: It is not at all necessary. Science is the Truth, and your saying that it has healed you will make it neither more nor less than the absolute truth about God and man. Thus many months slipped away and my testimony remained unspoken. However, I now appreciate the privilege of telling, in part at least, what Science has done for me during these four happy years.
In the first place, I was healed in one treatment of a distressing physical condition for which I had been under medical and osteopathic treatment during a period of fourteen months. The eight different physicians of various schools, to whom I turned for help, were all at a loss to account for my condition, and for the reason that they were looking for the root of the disease in the body when the cause was mental. As soon as I saw that God is not the author of disease, I ceased to believe in it as a reality, and the disease disappeared. A few months after my first healing, a severe cold was healed in one treatment. In the evening when I went for the treatment my voice was inaudible. To the astonishment of my family, the next morning my voice was perfectly clear. They knew that on previous occasions, when I had relied upon material remedies, such a cold usually lingered from one to two weeks.
One of the greatest blessings I have gained from Science—a blessing out-measuring all physical benefits—is an understanding of God as ever-present Love. Before I studied Science and Health, I had been an agnostic, because the anthropomorphic God of theology did not satisfy me, and I felt obliged to withdraw from the church in which I had been brought up. However, it was necessary for me to read the Bible every day, and the strength and beauty of the 91st Psalm appealed to me. It had long been a favorite with me, and often, after reading it aloud, I would say to myself, "If it were only true!" Science and Health proved to me that it is true; and it was through the help of this Psalm and of the forty-sixth that I was able to overcome a great fear of lightning,—a fear that hung over me like a nightmare during the months when thunder-storms occur. With Science and Health to interpret the Bible for me, I soon saw that God is "a very present help in trouble." I know that nothing will ever be able to separate me from His omnipresent love. Each day's work in Christian Science brings to me a deeper sense of gratitude towards Mrs. Eddy, whose wondrous book has reclaimed me from the darkness of agnosticism by giving me an understanding of the God who is All in all.
