It has been over three years since I was healed in Christian Science
It has been over three years since I was healed in Christian Science. I had been doctoring probably twice that long with eminent physicians in various cities, the last being one of the in Chicago; in fact we moved to that purposely to be with him. Three years were spent in doing all that was prescribed for me—massage, electricity, and medicine,—and at the end of this time I felt worse than I had ever felt before. One day I went up to the office and said that I felt worse than usual. I was duly examined, as I had been many times previous, and told I had well-nigh every ill to which humanity is subject, and in three years more might be well, if I did just as I had been doing; but he could not promise me. Think of it! Three years more of living like an old woman—and a sick one at that—and I only eighteen! For the first time I was discouraged, sick at heart as well as in body, and I said, "I am going to a Christian Scientist. I don't know what Christian Science is, but I am going to find out." I knew so little about it that I had to get down a classified telephone book to find the name of one to whom I might go. Mother was with me, and although she did not approve, knowing as little about it as I, she thought she would let me have my way until I came to myself again. We soon came to the practitioner's office and I laid bare my heart with all its troubles to her.
I had had ulceration of the intestines, combined with a form of typhoid fever, and had never regained strength or health. I suffered from nervousness, blinding headaches, and fainting fits. I was at the age when I should have been in school, but I could not study; so all I did after eating my little meals of "predigested food" was to take a long walk with my trained nurse, whom we had had for three years, or she would give me a massage to help digest the already digested food. However, it is all a dream to me now. I soon found what Christian Science really is,—that it is indeed "God with us,"—and the disease which prominent physicians for years had been vainly trying to heal, was cured in five treatments. To satisfy my parents of the cure—for mortal mind is ever skeptical—I have since been examined by physicians and found to be normal in every way. Personally I needed not to be told I was cured; I knew it in a thousand ways; I can eat anything, have no more trouble with headaches,—in short, have had no recurrence of the old ailments in any way.
For these and all the other tenfold greater blessings received through Christian Science, I can only say, "God, I thank thee," and try to live the truth pointed out to me by our Leader.—Virginia A. Shayne, Chicago, Ill.
