When, in the fall of 1903, I began Christian Science...
When, in the fall of 1903, I began Christian Science treatment, I was encased in a plaster cast on account of a serious spinal trouble. I had learned of Christian Science the fall before and had been reading continuously for a year, but with no special thought of working out of my difficulty, though I had had some beautiful demonstrations over insomnia and other troubles. During the three prior years I had been under seven different physicians, besides having other material treatment. At the time I began Christian Science treatment I was practically reduced to going to and from my office on the cars, and could do little else. As a consequence I was very fearful, but notwithstanding this, after the second treatment I took off the cast and have not had it on since. What a glorious relief it was! My gratitude to God, and to our dear Leader for the great truths given us through Science and Health and for the daily blessings they bring, physically, mentally, morally, and spiritually, is unbounded.
My healing was not a rapid one, as it was about ten months before I realized that the demonstration had been made. I owe a world of gratitude not only for the physical healing, but for the inestimable benefit of the great spiritual uplift I received through the uncovering of the errors of sense. There were times during my treatment when I suffered severely, and nothing but the understanding of Truth which I had gained could have kept me from panic. Since the summer of 1904 I have had a constantly increasing sense of health, until to-day I am the surprise and wonder of all who saw me two years ago.
Had I been relieved through materia medica I would still have been the slave of material sense, whereas I now enjoy, in a measure at least, "the glorious liberty of the children of God." I have not taken any medicine since the fall of 1902, the realization of the truth, as taught in the Bible and Science and Health, having been all-sufficient to meet any discordant conditions as they arose. I am, nevertheless, grateful to my physicians for the help they endeavored to give me and for their uniform kindness and consideration; the only regret I have is that they are practising materia medica instead of Christian Science.
