AMONG THE CHURCHES
First Church of Christ, Scientist, was formally dedicated yesterday with services in the forenoon and evening. The church had been completed for nearly a year, but owing to the delay in getting the pews the dedication had to be postponed. The address, given by the First Reader of the church, was in part as follows:—
Christian Science was first introduced into San Diego in July, 1887, by two Christian Science practitioners coming from San Francisco and commencing the work of healing the sick and teaching Christian Science. The first organized Christian Scientist association in San Diego was formed August, 1890. In December, 1892, it was decided to organize a church, and April 5, 1897, the church was legally incorporated according to the laws of California. At a called meeting held on July 27, 1904, the president of the church brought before the members the desirability for immediate and united effort to provide a church home of their own, and on Dec. 31, 1904, the corner-stone was laid. A year from this date the opening services were held, Dec. 31, 1905. All the teachers and practitioners that have worked in this field have struggled through deep waters to build the structure of Truth and Love, and during the building of the church the Board of Directors had many hard problems to master, but they held steadfastly to Principle, knowing, except the Lord built the house, they labor in vain that build it.
Christian Science is in accord with the Science of being which Jesus demonstrated, healing the sick and destroying sin. This healing has been lost to the world through clinging to personal sense and sin. Jesus said: "My Father worketh hitherto, and I work." And Paul said, "Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.... That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke." Jesus was governed by God, divine Principle, and this Principle, Love, should govern every man.
