[Written for the Sentinel.]

Retrospect

They who have drained earth's changeful bowl,
And tasted sap of galling root
As well as juice of ripened fruit,
And learned how bitter-sweet the dole,—

They who have conquered self, and won
Love's pathway to the heart of things,
Have spread their new-found spirit wings
And soared beyond earth's twilight sun.

Those who have dreamed, and wake at last,
Like mountain climbers gazing back,
See Love's own finger o'er their track.
And joy to know their bondage past.
