I first heard of Christian Science about four years ago,...
I first heard of Christian Science about four years ago, and I can now see that it came to me as a direct answer to my desire to meet with people who accepted the teachings of the New Testament in their entirety and endeavored to put them into practice. As long ago as I can remember, I always held the thought that Christianity would one day be proved to be a science, but I never dreamed that it would be now or that I would have the privilege of becoming a Christian Science student; so my delight may easily be imagined when the truth was presented to me and shown me to be one with good. At that time I had never thought of spiritual healing,—so blindly had I read my Bible,—but this was only an additional blessing that I was most thankful to accept. I felt it was worth while to give up my whole life to prove whether it was true or not, but the proofs came to me very quickly, and I was able to help myself and others physically. I had, of course, much to overcome. I had a great objection to church organizations, and it was some time before I recognized Mrs. Eddy as Leader, and The Mother Church as the vine of which the local churches are the branches; but one by one these difficulties have melted away, and I am thankful to say I begin to see things more in their right light and to give honor where honor is due.
During these four years I have had great opportunities of proving the healing and saving power of Christianity, accepted and proved to be a Science. Amongst the evils overcome have been polypus; varicose veins healed by reading Science and Health; water on the knee healed in one week's absent treatment after seven weeks' surgical treatment had failed. One can never tell the half of all Truth has done and is doing, even in an individual experience. For all this, and for much more,—for her reiteration of the truth that the kingdom of heaven is on earth,—I give thanks to God, and am deeply grateful to Mrs. Eddy. Without Science and Health, and without her consecrated, courageous life, I should still be struggling helplessly with sin and sickness.
