In October, 1899, my grandmother was stricken with creeping paralysis, and by the following December she was helpless,—had to be lifted and turned in bed like a babe. The physician in attendance said he could do nothing more for her, and that the end was near. At Christmas time my uncle came to see her, thinking it to be for the last time, and together he and I visited the physician at his office to have a talk with him, hoping to hear that something might yet be done for her; but after explaining the nature of the disease, he said in a kind manner, "I wish it were in my power to help your mother, but no power on earth can restore life to those limbs."
Soon after this a friend called whose wife had been healed in Christian Science, and after we had told him the doctor's decision, that my grandmother might pass away any hour, he said, "Why don't you try Christian Science?" I had heard of it, and thought its spiritual teaching beautiful, but could not understand the physical healing. We were, however, willing to try it as a last hope. A practitioner was brought to us the next day, and after the first treatment there was a wondrous change for the better. From that time, about the first week in January, the improvement was steady: by the middle of April she was able to go down stairs, walking one step at a time, and by the end of the summer she was fully healed. She is now in her eightieth year and is as well and active as twenty years ago.
Since that time Christian Science has meant much to my family and to myself, in spiritual and physical help. As the cloudy, fiery pillar led the children of Israel in their pilgrimage, so through dark and stormy places divine Love has led me. until in Christian Science I have found my "desired haven."—Mrs. J. E. Selfe, Wellesley, Mass.
