The Lectures

Mr. Bicknell Young delivered a lecture in Horticultural Hall, October 30, under the auspices of First Church of Christ, Scientist. Mr. Charles H. Fahnestock, First Reader, introduced the speaker, and said in part,—

In vain have the creeds and dogmas or scholarly attainment essayed to solve the problem, "What is Truth?" simple though it is; thereby confirming the words of the Master, "Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall in no wise enter therein." Imbued with this child-likeness, with a heart filled with love for God and mankind, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, the Rev. Mary Baker G. Eddy, has been enabled to answer the question, illumine the Scriptures, interpret the assertion of the Christ, "I am the way, the truth, and the life," and give to the world her marvelous text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, the perusal and study of which has revealed to thousands their true being and relation to God, causing them joyously to exclaim with Job. "I have heard of thee thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee;" and in a spirit of loving solicitude reiterate to fellow-mortals Job's all-inclusive admonition, "Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace." This spiritual perception of, and acquaintance with God, is the impregnable bulwark of Christian Science. It quells fear, dissipates doubt, and solves the problem of atonement through the revelation and realization of man's true at-one-ment with God.

The plaintive wail for relief from the thraldom of mortal suffering, the cry for rest and peace, finds a ready response and speedy succor in this applied Science of Christianity which Jesus taught and practised, as thousands now joyfully bear witness. Above all, it unfolds the true import of the Master's utterance in his wonderful prayer preceding his betrayal, "And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom thou has sent."
