A Simple Rule

In our every-day life there come up many problems which are not always easy to solve, but which we must work out,—problems of our relations with our fellow-men in business and social life, questions of duty in civic and religions life, rules of conduct in the home; in fact, we are everywhere confronted by the question, What is the right thing to do?

A clear, definite rule for action was given me recently, and it had proved so helpful that I pass it on, hoping that others may gain from the use of it. It is as follows: Will I know more of God by doing or by not doing this? The right answer to this question, taken as a guide, must lead one in the path of righteousness.

By following this simple rule I have proved that problems which otherwise had been the source of much perplexity were easily solved. This rule, intelligently applied, had given me a clearer realization of God as an ever-present and available help,—as a Father to whom I can go in trustfulness, knowing that I shall receive what I need. It has also helped me to overcome a strong repugnance for a certain kind of work which it seemed necessary for me to do, by enabling me to understand that my first duty was to know God; and by destroying hatred with love, it certainly would teach me more of God.
