In obedience to the command of Jesus, who said, "Freely ye have received, freely give," I gladly testify to the healing and saving power of Christian Science. From a small boy I was a great sufferer from severe headaches, also chronic constipation and piles. Physicians failed to cure me, and in addition to their prescriptions, I had taken nearly every remedy recommended as a sure cure. The attacks continued with increasing frequency and severity until 1892, when I was scarcely able to attend to my business. I was obliged to have constant medical attention, my physician sitting by my bedside for hours at a time, watching for some symptoms which might disclose the cause of my suffering as I lay in a semi-conscious condition.
Drugs and electricity failed to afford even temporary relief, and I was taken to an oculist, who, after making a most rigid examination of my eyes, informed me I had astigmatism to such a degree that he was surprised I had not been an inmate of an insane asylum. Glasses were prescribed and fitted, which in time brought some measure of relief, the attacks of headache becoming lighter and less frequent, and for a few years I was freer from suffering than I had ever been. However, my hope of health and happiness was not yet to be realized, as I soon found myself in the grasp of another tyrant,—a severe stomach trouble. As I was then a firm believer in materia medica, I consulted one physician after another, until the skill of twenty was tested and I had indeed suffered "many things of many physicians, . . . and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse."
The diagnoses of my case were as numerous as the physicians, each one differing from the others; and as several of my ancestors had passed away with cancer, I felt sure I too was a victim of that dread disease. Being a man of the world, my condition was aggravated by indulgence in that greatest curse,—the social drink habit.
