Soon after my marriage, twenty-six years ago, I had a severe spell of illness which left me in a very delicate state, and I never knew what it was to be really well and strong. A good deal of the time I was in the hands of doctors, and was in a hospital four times. A little over three years ago, I got into such a state that I could not sit up or walk even a few steps without pain, and at times the pain was so intense that the family would lose much rest at night trying to give me relief. The doctors thought the only help for me was to have a very serious operation performed, but I was unwilling, as I had known others to have the same operation without receiving any benefit.
A friend wrote, begging me to try Christian Science, and as it was my only hope, I consented in fear and trembling, not knowing anything about it and fearing it was the work of the devil. I, however, wrote to a practitioner, asking her to help me, but before sending the letter, I got on my knees and prayed most earnestly that if it were wrong for me to take this step, the letter would never reach its destination. I cannot say how thankful I am that it did reach the practitioner, and by return mail I had a letter from her, saying she had begun treatment. In a few days I was almost free from pain, was walking up and down stairs, and in a short time was able to drive about the country. I have been improving in health and strength ever since. I think I gained at least forty pounds the first year after taking treatment. Now I am a strong woman, I do not keep a servant, and get on nicely with my work. I am living in more comfort than I have done for twenty-six years.
Words cannot express what a blessing Christian Science has been to this family in every way, and I pray that my heart will ever be filled with love and gratitude to God, and to His faithful messenger, Mrs. Eddy.
