I wish to express my thankfulness for the many benefits...
I wish to express my thankfulness for the many benefits which have come to me through Christian Science. Like many others, I sought this Science hoping for relief from pain and suffering, and I wish it were possible for me to express the gratitude I feel for benefits received since then, personally and by members of my family. When quite young I had a very severe attack of what was called inflammatory rheumatism, which left me in a very weak and badly crippled condition, with a much impaired use of my lower limbs. After some years' cessation, the ailment again became manifest in a very aggravated form. I suffered terribly, and was at times utterly helpless. Relief was sought through many remedies; I was at different locations, and tried water, air, medicines, and mud. I was experimented upon by many physicians, but was not cured. For years I suffered thus.
Coming from the doctor's office one day, I met a friend from New York, who commented upon my bandaged and crippled condition, and suggested that when I was satisfied of the worthlessness of medicines, I try Christian Science. While her remedy was not at all intelligent to me, it was something new, and I was ready to try it at once. Hav ing made a god of the doctors and medicines so many years, I hesitated when she told me it would be necessary to abandon both to make the trial; but I finally promised to let both alone, and she consented to help me.
She went home that afternoon and I did not see her again for over two years, but the pain disappeared before night, the swelling receding quickly. In three days I was entirely well, and never have had a rheumatic pain since, now over six years. I was, of course, thankful for the relief, but it never occurred to me that it might be beneficial to ascertain how I was cured.
