I first heard about Christian Science two and a half years...
I first heard about Christian Science two and a half years ago. I was feeling quite miserable, both physically and mentally, when a friend told me that Christian Science teaches that God is Love. They were only a few words, but they struck me so forcibly that I longed to hear more. Notwithstanding this, it was half a year before I read any Christian Science literature. Then my friend gave me a Christian Science Journal, and a few days after, Science and Health. I had bad eyes from my childhood, and several doctors who treated me warned me to be very careful not to tire them, because they were so very weak. For two years before I heard of Christian Science I stopped reading altogether and did nothing that could harm my eyes except drawing. I am a student of art in the academy in The Hague, but the last year I could work only a few hours each day. Then I got a copy of Science and Health and began to read "Prayer" that very evening. I read on and on, although the English language was a great difficulty to me. In a fortnight my eyes were healed. I was able to work the whole day long and read in the evening without tiring them, but I still wore my eyeglasses, being shortsighted. One day I said to my friend, "If everything in Science and Health is true, and I know it must be, I do not need my eyeglasses." She answered, "No, you really do not need them, but you may not put them off before you know that you do not need them." The next day was Sunday. I thought a great deal about what she told me, and read in Science and Health. On Monday, when going to the academy, I left my eyeglasses at home. Arriving there, I sat down before my model, but seemingly could not see anything. Then I began to declare the truth for myself, knowing that sight is spiritual. After a quarter of an hour I could see just enough to begin my drawing, and I began to pray and continued doing so all the time. Every minute I saw better, and I worked on happily until my drawing was finished, and by that time my eyesight was completely recovered. Since then I have been healed (simply by reading Science and Health) of rheumatism, severe headaches, cough, and every day I feel more and more the truth of these words of our Lord, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free,"—free from everything that is unlike God, good.
I thank God every day that I know He is Love and Truth and Life, and our dear Leader, that she revealed it to me.
