The Fair Test

Wilmington (Del.) News

WHILE forty years is but a short time in which to introduce a new system of healing, yet its adherents are quite willing that the present results of Christian Science should be compared, patient for patient, with the results of materia medica, after two thousand five hundred years of experimental practice. And this comparison may be made with cases resulting from dissipation and debauchery, or with cases attended with either acute or chronic symptoms. That the results of Christian Science have been proved to be of practical worth is evidenced by the fact that three states of the Union, after critical examination of the practice and results of its work, have sanctioned Christian Science healing by legal decree.

Has it ever occurred to our critic, that if, in the twenty five centuries since Hippocrates first systematized materia medica, the science and art of its healing had been brought anywhere near a normal state of perfection, "the medical fraternity" would not now be in a most "crucial position" as he states, and there could not possibly be the enormous demand for some other system of healing? The writer champions Christian Science fearlessly to-day, because he has witnessed cures in his own family and among relatives and friends where the best specialists in their kind and humanitarian efforts, not only failed to effect a cure but were convinced that these cases were absolutely incurable.

With nearly two thousand five hundred years the start, materia medica still racing after the uncaught microbe that will not yield to allopathic pill or homoeopathic pellet, and, moreover, with the question still unsolved whether this same microbe is an invader or a welcome scavenger ; with no definite cause or cure for cancer ; with the ravages of tuberculosis still unchecked, — is are some doctors, lawyers, judges, thinkers, and scholars who are turning in search of an exact science of healing, which, like all truth, must be the same yesterday, to-day, and forever? And is it strange that. after witnessing the same proofs of the same Christ that met the needs of humanity two thousand years ago, is it strange these investigators, like Luke, the beloved and learned physician, are willing to leave the medicine-case behind and adopt the more excellent and spiritual way?
