The other evening when asked by a friend how much...

The other evening when asked by a friend how much had been spent on physicians and material means during a long illness, previous to coming into Christian Science, I stopped for the first time to make a rough estimate, and also to consider the great difference in the amount given for help in Christian Science. Between two and three thousand dollars had been expended in seeking relief through materia medica, and the result was what? I was "nothing bettered, but rather grew worse,"—a complete wreck from extreme mental and physical suffering, with seemingly not a ray of light before me.

Here Christian Science stepped in, and after months of patient, faithful work on the part of the practitioner, there came slowly and surely a great change: a desire to live, instead of wanting to die; a sense of happiness, instead of sadness; of joy, instead of sorrow; of strength, instead of weakness, and of helpfulness instead of helplessness. Still the work goes on, the healing and regenerating work of overcoming the old self by the real self made in "God's image and likeness;" and my heart is filled with a song of liberty and gladness. Do you ask what was given for this rich blessing? In money, it was about three hundred dollars, but my prayer is, that gratitude and loving work in Christian Science may some day pay the rest of the debt.
