The Law of Christian Science

Christian Science first appealed to me through a sense of law. It was presented to me as a governing power that ruled all, and I saw in it a law under which mortals might learn to live perfectly, a law which would govern our homes, our business, our social affairs, our every thought and action; in short, a something to govern us completely and harmoniously. My ideas of Christian Science were at that time very vague and unsettled, yet I never doubted its being the truth and what I wanted.

Soon after, I purchased Science and Health and read it nearly through, and during the reading my thoughts underwent a great change, though at that time I did not appreciate the transition, nor did I know it was taking place.

During the reading of Science and Health I overcame an attack of paralysis in eight or ten hours, by declaring God's allness and the nothingness of evil. I was but a beginner and I did not think I knew anything of Science, yet when my mind seemed almost a blank, and my mouth refused to speak, I mentally declared from morning till evening, "God is all, there is no evil," and when the night came I had "received the promise" and proved the unreality of evil. Soon after this my babe was born, with but little suffering, and I was up and dressed every day after, with no bad effects whatever. There were many lesser troubles met and overcome in the same way, yet, strange as it may seem, I laid the book aside for four years, thinking I could not understand it without a teacher. I know now that I was being made over anew, and getting ready for the revelation of these great and grand truths; that I was at that time too blind to see, though I was always looking forward to the time when I should have an opportunity to study and understand the teaching of Science and Health.
