About Suspending Rules

There seems to come a time in the history of every organization or society, when its members desire to act at once concerning some matter, and in order to expedite action it is proposed to "suspend the rules." As Christian Science churches do not differ, in this regard, from other organizations, it is well for us to understand what may, and may not be accomplished by a motion to suspend the rules.

As a general proposition it is safe to say that standing rules may be suspended at any meeting, without previous notice, but By-laws cannot be suspended at all.

By-laws are the organic law of the society, and usually contain a section setting forth the modus operandi of their amendment or repeal. In some states, the statutes under which corporations are formed, prescribe the method of amending the By-laws, and in those states any provision of the By-laws in conflict with the statute, is null and void.
