When I was six years old I was taken sick with the measles, which left me partly blind and cross-eyed. It was with the greatest difficulty that I attended to my studies at school. I was taken to the best oculists in Paris; they accomplished nothing. When I reached the age of fourteen I was taken to a celebrated English oculist, who ordered the application of Spanish blisters on each side of my eyes. They drew for six months. He also ordered me to be kept for three months in a dark room. I went out every evening after sunset. The pupils of the eyes were straightened, but not the eyes. Years went on, my sight grew worse. I was taken to the best oculists in New York; they could do nothing, but they ordered me to wear glasses, and very strong glasses they were. I was under the constant fear of losing my sight.

One day I called on a friend who told me how her son's sight had been restored, and she advised me to go to see a Christian Science practitioner in New York City. I did so; he gave me a treatment, I went home, took off my glasses, which I have never used since. Feeling I ought to destroy them, I took them to my practitioner to know what I should do with them. I left them there, and I have never seen them since. Now I am most happy. I read, write, sew, and enjoy life.

I am fifty-eight years old, and people take me to be only forty. My friends remark "How young you are growing!" "Yes," I answer, "the new birth."
