The Message

The annual Message of our beloved Leader, the Rev. Mary Baker Eddy, to The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Mass., is, in the broadest sense, an historical deliverance. It is historical as well in its relation to the current history of the world as in its connection with the Christian Science movement.

That a woman who is regarded as a Christian idealist— and justly so—should exhibit such a grasp of international affairs as would do high credit to the best statesmanship of the age; that the Founder of a religious movement whose very watchword is Divine Love; that a woman of a deeply poetical nature and a proficient writer of verse from her childhood; and that so close a student of the Bible as she has been for half a century, should possess also the ability to analyze, from the standpoint of practical statesmanship, the affairs of state which are challenging the earnest attention of the world's greatest minds, is among the wonders of Mrs. Eddy's character and career. She thus illustrates the possibility of combining keen intellectual perception with exalted spiritual discernment, or a happy coincidence of the ideal and the practical. The Message, will in this respect, bear close study, as it will also in its spiritual aspect.

There is running through the Message a vein of deep and serious admonition to Christian Scientists. If it be studied deeply and sincerely by us until we come to comprehend its import to each, and comprehending, act accordingly, we shall thereby best show our appreciation of our Leader's love and labor for us and for the world, as well as most effectively aid her in building up the Cause.
