When I was twenty years of age it became quite serious and troublesome, and I was obliged to wear a truss all the time.

Four years ago, while at work, I jumped off from a machine about four feet high, which caused more trouble. The physicians finally concluded that an operation was my only hope, although my wife begged them not to take me to the hospital, and I resisted with all the strength I possessed. In the mean time the doctors had gone to get the operating room in readiness for me.
