"Many Things ye cannot Bear Now"

From The Church Standard we republish the following extract from a paper entitled, "The Development of Divine Truth; or, the Gospel for To-day," by Rev. A. R. Keiffer, D.D., of Bradford, Pa.

Under the guidance of the spirit of truth there are successive revelations, as the race becomes prepared for them, for every age and for every man. They never come too soon; they never come too late. The spirit makes no mistakes, does not try to impart a truth before there is a readiness for it—step by step—according to present need and capacity. In his guidance the withheld completions of truth are wisely withheld. Even liberty enslaves those who are not fit for it. We get more truth when we are able to bear more. Only we are never to be satisfied with what we have and consider it complete. . . . As F. D. Maurice says, "God will not have us be satisfied with our advanced knowledge or great discoveries, but will always be showing us, through His spirit, things that are coming, giving us an apprehension of truths that we have not yet reached, though they be truths which are the same yesterday, to-day, and forever."

Why, just think for how many centuries men have been studying the spoken words of Christ, and yet they are newer, and deeper, and diviner to-day, than ever before. Therefore, if he has nothing new to say to you and to me, it is because we are not listening, not because he is not speaking.
