Is Christian Science Christian?
Minister Seventh Day Baptist Church, Berlin, N. Y.
The above subject was discussed at the Methodist Episcopal Church last night (May 4) by the pastor. He and the writer are good friends, and have thus far worked in harmony. But if he believes the statements which he produced in his attempted exposition of Christian Science last night, he and I must take issue on that point. In conversation with him a few days before he spoke on the subject, I advised him to study the teachings of Christian Science more thoroughly before he attempted to present his views.
After his address I could not help but feel that he would have been wise had he followed his brother minister's advice. I purposely withhold his name, not wishing to parade his ignorance of the great and helpful truths of Christian Science beyond the length and breadth of Berlin, N. Y.
Why so large a number of the Methodist clergy are so harsh in their judgments, and so free in the use of invectives against Christian Science is a mystery; unless, perchance, they are fearful lest the rapid growth, the apparent good works, and the eagerness with which many good and wise people drink in the truths of Christian Science, will undermine Methodism. Do the Bishops of the M. E. Church live up to the following admonitions which appear in the charge given to them when they are about to enter the important duties of their office? "Be to the flock of Christ a shepherd, not a wolf; feed them, devour them not. Hold up the weak, heal the sick, bind up the broken, bring again the outcast, seek the lost." Before we criticise those who are trying to do all possible to alleviate the sufferings of humanity, let us study the "platform" on which we stand. It may be we shall find a healing plank in it! If so, stand upon it, do not step over it. And may God bless you!
