The salaries and other expenses paid to consular officers for the last fiscal year amounted to $1,194,447. The amount paid to ambassadors and ministers was $597,332. This expense account, owing to extensions from time to time in the service, is steadily increasing.

At the invitation of President Roosevelt representatives of the Miners' Unions and of the coal operators met with the President in Washington last Friday to consider the anthracite coal strike.

Former Secretary of War, Russell A. Alger, has accepted the appointment of the Governor of Michigan to fill out the unexpired term of the late Senator McMillan.
