Before learning of Christian Science, I had doctored for...
Before learning of Christian Science, I had doctored for several years for many severe chronic diseases, and becoming discouraged, I prayed God to direct me out of such a discordant state, and if there were a higher, holier life that I might know it, and walk in it. I was brought up a strict Christian disciple and thought my religion the only true religion, yet there was always a yearning for a higher life and my physical suffering drove me into it. I knew very little about Christian Science, it only being mentioned to me as a healing agency, and as such I sought a practitioner, January 4, 1901, and arranged for one week's treatment. I was entirely healed in that time, for which I have always felt grateful to God, to our Leader, and to the practitioner who led me out of gloom and despair into a brighter way. I went to her as I should go to any doctor, not realizing that I was getting something more than the physical healing, which is the smallest part in Christian Science and not to be compared with the spiritual illumination. Almost two years have elapsed since I was healed, and not one of the old troubles has returned, nor have we ever since that healing had a doctor or a drop of medicine for any of the family, which proves to me that God is Good, and only Good, and that He is an ever-present help. My husband read the Christian Science text-book, Science and Health, and accepted the whole of its teachings as a beautiful truth; and my three children also love the Science and prove it an ever-present help to them. We have many beautiful demonstrations in our home, one of which I wish to mention here.
Our second boy, aged twelve, was shot in the eyes with a cannon a year ago last Fourth of July. Instantly he put his hands to his eyes and declared God as his sight, walked into the house unaided, got Science and Health, but could not see to read. He knelt in silent prayer and asked me to demonstrate for him, which I did as best I knew how, at that time being only a beginner. The pain in his face and eyes all left and the powder came to the surface and could be wiped off. We never even had a surgeon to remove powder. His eyes and face were full of it, but it never touched his sight; he was so much improved by noon that he went out to the park. All the redness disappeared and in one week he was entirely free. I repeat my thankfulness to God and to our Leader for giving this precious truth to suffering humanity to uplift, guide, direct, and keep us each day, for it removes sinful desires and therefore makes it easy to live a Christian life. I can say with the Psalmist, "Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits."—Mrs. Minnie, M. Karns, Richmond, Ind.
