Demonstration in a Prison

It has been my privilege to visit men interested in Christian Science who are inmates of our state prison at San Quentin, Cal. Work was begun here by a prisoner whose friends sent him Science and Health. Since then considerable Science literature has been in circulation, and it is bearing fruit.

During my last visit I talked with a prisoner who told me a recent demonstration. He was climbing a ladder with a heavy block and tackle, when the ladder broke and he fell thirty feet to the cement floor, striking his temple and wrist. While falling he remembered God's protection, and that he could not be hurt. Men ran to pick him up, and the foreman said, "Take that man to the hospital and see that he is cared for," but the man himself said, "No; I will finish my day's work." One standing near remarked, "That man is a Christian Scientist. You cannot hurt a Christian Scientist." The man completed his work, and though the fall left some marks these soon disappeared.

A year or two ago, when this man first heard of Christian Science, reading the book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," for one week cured him of all desire for tobacco which he had used habitually for years.
