Comments on Dr. Davis' Sermon

Editor The Advertiser.

Dear Sir:—In your issue of May 1st, you publish the report of a sermon by Rev. Doctor Davis in which he quotes I Timothy, 6:20, 21; also 2 Corinthians, 2:2, 3.

I can endorse all that is said in respect to the admonition to Timothy as well as to the Corinthians. I realize the great importance of the avoidance of that which comes under the name of Science, and yet is not Science, and I also endorse the admonition to beware of the serpent which would beguile; but the question is, what is the serpent, and what constitutes the false Science? Our Master said, "Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me?" Will our good brother name to me the evil works that have been accomplished through Christian Science? Is it possible that the healing of the sick, reforming of the sinner, the binding up of the broken-hearted, the destruction of appetites and passions, and the general reformation of mankind is the work of the serpent? That which points to God as the only power, and which advocates implicit faith in Good, which breaks up family feuds, establishes the true brotherhood of man, creates a love for the Bible in the hearts of men who have before been sceptics, and which brings God to the atheist, cannot be the serpent against which Paul warned the Corinthians.
