Tobacco Habit Healed

New as I am to the atmosphere of Christian Science, I offer my first experience in it for the benefit of those who may be helped thereby. During the forenoon of the last Monday in August, 1899, I was unexpectedly brought into contact with the first Christian Scientist I had ever spoken to; read the first line of Christian Science literature I had ever seen; and made my first attempt to see for myself wherein the Christian Scientist based his claim to separate religious existence as a follower of the Master, a true servant of the most High God.

I had gone to the healer to arrange for treatment for my wife, who was supposed to be incurably rheumatic, after fifteen years of more or less constant treatment by skilful and honest physicians. I supposed I was looking into the honesty of the healer for my wife's sake. I discovered, to my astonishment, that the healer, in the mean time, had been investigating my honesty of purpose. When I left her and attempted to resume an old tobacco habit, I found myself so permeated with new divine so elevated by my newly discovered sonship with divine Principle, that tobacco was distasteful, disgusting, and unmanly, and since that hour it has never passed my lips.

A sign had been granted me. A thing I had been wanting to do for years, in my former thought, by prayer and by will-power, had come to pass unconsciously in an hour, and only later did I learn that it was the natural result of a Scientific law. Surely, God is in this movement. My home and my heart bear witness to the Truth. My wife and children join me in a united and unbroken testimony of health and love and well-being, and as I said to my former rector, "Certainly I will talk this matter over with you, but not to argue it. My dear sir, there are convictions too deep for argument."
