"Observer" on Christian Science

Editor of The Mirror:—In response to an invitation I attended the weekly meeting of First Church of Christ, Scientist, my object being to see and hear for myself something about the new movement which is attracting so much attention and meeting with so much criticism.

Taking the elevator at The Kennard at 7.30, I soon found myself in their meeting room, a comfortable and appropriately furnished room on the fifth floor, capable of seating some one hundred and fifty people.

The service commenced with the singing of a hymn selected from a collection of hymns and tunes from different sources and printed especially for the use of the Christian Scientists, and I noted that in every part of the room there were copies of this hymn book with words and music legibly printed, and that the casual visitor was courteously supplied with the same. The singing was hearty and apparently enjoyed by all present, being led by several ladies with remarkably fine voices, which gave unmistakable evidence that said vocalists at least were sound and well. Right here I may say that I never attended a religious meeting where the audience seemed more thoroughly happy, and as a whole showed evidence of better health and contentment than was the case here
