Christian Science Work in the Jail

It is hoped that it will be a point of interest in the progress of Christian Science to tell something of the work being done in the city jail at Rock Island, Ill. It was begun by the request of a prisoner about three years ago and has continued uninterruptedly up to the present time. Two members of our church take the work for a few months at a time and go to the jail every Sunday afternoon.

The men congregate in a corridor around a long table, at the end of which the two Scientists stand to read the regular Quarterly Lesson. The most earnest attention is given to the reading, and recently some of the prisoners have joined in the responsive reading.

There have been marked demonstrations from the power of the silent Word in overcoming opposition, flippancy, and pride. After the service in the men's department the Lesson is repeated for the women, with whom the work is also encouraging and interesting. The same phases of error here have been destroyed and in place there is close attention paid to all that is read.
