The Way out of Bondage

The communication of gratitude in the Sentinel of January 11, concerning a contribution of December 21, awakened my thought anew to a demonstration of sin-healing that this article of December 21, "Christmas Gifts," achieved in the consciousness of one who was burdened with the sense of malice; and who had sought repeatedly, and apparently in vain, for deliverance, striving to realize that God was Love, and was able, and surely would deliver from this monster in belief. The apparent failure to demonstrate this supremacy of Love caused a sense of despair that appeared unbearable. At this juncture the article "Christmas Gifts" was presented to the thought, and the glory of divine Love appeared and the sin-healing was found to be accomplished.

Thus Love's answer to the soul's desire came, and the love of God and man—even every one—was felt in all its natural simplicity. This relief was found to be abiding so far as it related to the particular problem presented for solution; proving that sin was actually destroyed by the consciousness of divine Love. In view of this, how much, indeed, have we occasion for gratitude for the Light that is so potent that going forth through the columns of Christian Science publications, from the honest enlightened heart, untrammeled by selfishness, alias sin, it is sure, as in the above example, to accomplish the good whereto it is sent, even the destruction of sin, the greatest of all achievements.

When we come to get a clear view of the claims of sin-bondage, and our seeming subjection to it, it is appalling. There is no hope for the sinner from the human plane of deliverance. Do what we will in the merely human way, it only amounts to a more subtle phase of self mastering a less subtle phase; and the last state becomes worse than the first.
