Christian Science
The Commercial Appeal
There is perhaps no religious teaching extant to-day in regard to which there is so great a lack of correct information, as there is with reference to true Christian Science teachings and methods. The popular mind seems to have become imbued with the idea that it is some monster of evil going about "seeking whom he may devour," and when we consider the methods adopted by some so-called Christian Scientists and many foolish utterances by well-meaning but over-zealous followers of this teaching, it is not at all surprising that the public should form erroneous ideas on this subject, and thus arrive at a false estimate of what Christian Science really is. After having reached such conclusions, many people believe themselves to be prejudiced against Christian Science, when the truth is they really have no prejudice against genuine Christian Science teaching in its practice and in its purity, but against their own false conception of its purpose, teachings, and practice.
Christian Science teaches what its name implies, knowledge of Christ; and the healing power of this understanding should only be used now as in the time of Jesus and the Apostles, as a means to an end, namely: that the power of God may be demonstrated, sinners brought to repentance and shown how to work out their own salvation. Healing the sick is the smallest part of Christian Science, work. It is but a stepping-stone to the higher spiritual attainments set forth and commanded in all the teachings of our blessed Saviour, Jesus Christ, in the spiritual understanding of their real meaning.
No true Christian Science healer, therefore, ever uses any questionable methods of securing patronage. Beyond a simple announcement of name and address, they never advertise in any manner whatever, but like their honorable brethren, the "regulars" in the medical profession, they let the results of their work speak for them, their patients being their only advertisement. Feeling assured that the foregoing statements will at least have a tendency to remove some of the misconceptions in regard to genuine Christian Science teaching and practice, I have the great pleasure and satisfaction of subscribing myself, one who is trying to be A Christian Scientist.
