Constant Growth
Like many others, when I first began the study of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," it seemed thoroughly foreign to me. Many times I because discouraged and put the book aside, believing I could not understand it, only to take it up again in my anxiety to know how I had received such relief from physical suffering. My healer had told me Science and Health explained it all. The first few meetings I attended with a friend, I hurried out of the hall as quickly as possible after meeting was over, as I was afraid I might meet some one I knew, and I did not want any one to know I was attending the meetings or was interested. I did not even tell my husband for several weeks after my first treatment.
Many times I determined not to let Science come between me and my church—the First Baptist—and once or twice I remember resolving to go to my old church instead of the Christian Science meeting, but I always attended the Christian Science meeting after all, yet with a desire to have no one know it.
How differently I feel about it now! I want all to know I believe in Christian Science and know the reason why. It truly gives us "the peace that passeth all understanding," and I realize more clearly every day that our growth in the work depends solely on our own efforts. It came to me so clearly recently how easy it is for us to depend on some one to help us. One evening while struggling with error I opened to page 327 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker G. Eddy, and read, "'Work out your own salvation,' is the demand of Life and Love; for to this end God worketh with you. 'Occupy till I come!' Wait for your reward, 'and be not weary in well-doing.' If your endeavors are beset by fearful odds, and you receive no present reward, go not back to error, nor become a sluggard in the race. When the smoke of battle clears away, you will discern the good you have done, and receive according to your deserving." What a beautiful promise! I soon made one of my best demonstrations and realized the reward was present, thus proving the necessity of working for ourselves. When we are able to put into practice our understanding of Truth to meet error in every way in which it is manifest, there comes the growth that cannot be hindered.
