Among the Churches

A handsome new church building is soon to be erected in San Jose, on the north side of St. James Street, facing St. James Park. For months the congregation of First Church of Christ, Scientist, has been constantly growing, till now it has reached proportions beyond the capacity of the Assembly Hall in the Louise Building on South Second Street, where the Sunday services and Wednesday evening meetings have been held.

Negotiations for the purchase of a lot have been in progress for some weeks, and last Thursday evening (February 22) a meeting of the congregation was held to pass upon the question definitely as to whether or not a lot should be purchased, and to decide as to what the location should be. Mr. F. C. Ensign presided at the meeting, which was a very enthusiastic one. It was unanimously decided to purchase the lot in the Charles White estate, owned by Mrs. Staples. Almost every dollar of the amount needed for the purchase of the lot, seven thousand dollars, was raised, so that the transaction will be on a cash basis. Yesterday the contract for the purchase of the lot was closed.

The movement to erect a church will now be pushed forward as rapidly as is expedient to insure that the structure will be a substantial one, that in architectural effect will be fully in keeping with its beautiful surroundings. The lot purchased is 137.5 feet from First Street, and has a frontage of 68.5 feet.
