Glasses Laid Aside

In February, 1899, I made the ride from San Francisco to Portland, Ore., with our Pacific Coast Agent. As it takes thirty-six hours to make this journey, we discussed many subjects, and finally he talked of himself, his home and family, telling of his prospects, hopes, etc., and of the only thing which seemed to worry him—the illness of his daughter, and at my request he told me of her case.

At that time she was about sixteen years old—had never been able to read or study, and what she knew of books had been taught her by a tutor reading and explaining to her, which had not proved very satisfactory, and that there was no hope of her ever being any better. She suffered almost constantly with severe headaches, and one of the most prominent oculists in San Francisco had said that sixteen per cent of her eyesight was gone. I told him what Christian Science had done for me and others that I knew personally, how I had been healed instantly, and was enabled to lay aside my glasses after wearing them for fifteen years. I gave him copies of the Journal and Sentinel that I had in my traveling bag.

I soon after returned to Chicago only to find a few days later that I must again go to San Francisco, and within thirty minutes after my arrival there, I met the mother and daughter, and told them all I could of Christian Science in thirty or forty minutes. There was great fear in this family that a Christian Scientist would insist on the young lady taking off her glasses, and that she would lose what sight she had. In June my friend came to Chicago, his daughter accompanying him. He said it was his desire to do everything possible for her. He had been directed to a noted oculist in New York, and no reference was made to Christian Science, except that I said, "When you get all through with these people Christian Science will heal your daughter."
