From Darkness to Light

When a child, two years old, I was afflicted with scrofula, for which my parents tried both physicians and home remedies, but all to no avail.

When I was fifteen years old I began to cough and spit blood, and develop all the symptoms of inherited consumption, as my mother, and most of her brothers and sisters had passed away with this dread disease.

I was supposed to inherit weak lungs, and when these alarming symptoms first manifested themselves, my father went to a specialist, the best physician he could get, who told my father not to give me medicine, or I would go that much faster.
