Aid for the Shakers

Editor of The Monitor:—I have learned with regret of the great misfortune which has befallen the North Family of Shakers at Canterbury in the destruction of many thousand dollar's worth of property by fire, with no insurance to offset their loss, even in part. I have frequently enjoyed their hospitality, and I am sufficiently acquainted with their pecuniary situation to realize how heavily the wiping out of their herd of cows, much of their provisions, and their costly buildings, must burden them. Concord people have known the members of the community for many years, and I am sure many share with me my sense of their worthiness and my sympathy for them in their present embarrassment. I therefore propose that contributions be made to aid them, and I gladly offer my subscription of twenty dollars as a beginning for a Concord fund in aid of the North Family of Shakers at Canterbury. General Harry H. Dudley at the Mechanicks National Bank has kindly consented to receive and forward such contributions as may be made to him.

Very respectfully,
Frank W. Rollins.
