Christmas Chimes
O'er
Bethlehem's hills, long years ago
Shone one bright star;
Its gleaming light the wise men saw,
And followed far,
Till they in lowly manger found
The Christ-child sweet,
And knelt in humble reverence
Low at his feet.
The virgin mother, o'er that babe
Kept silent ward,
While gold and frankincense and myrrh
They gave their Lord;
And wakeful shepherds listening, heard
A wondrous throng,
Sing "on earth peace, good-will to men,"
A glad new song.
Again that star, with living light
Illumes earth's skies—
And Truth's bright rays are shining where
The "young child lies."
Again a mother guards her child With tender care,
And all who follow Truth's star-gleams,
Her vigils share.
Like watchful "sentinels" of old
They loyal stand,
Till church-chimes ring, "peace and good-will"
O'er all our land.
