The courage to give

(Mark 6:34-44; Matthew 10:8)

When the boy offered his five loaves and two fish
he couldn’t have assumed that it would be enough
to feed the thousands who had gathered
to hear the Master preach.

The disciples had balked, and wanted to send them away
—surely everyone should buy their
own bread and not expect another handout.
But what had the Master been saying?

“Freely ye have received, freely give,” was his
command when he sent them out to heal
the broken hearts. The laws of his kingdom are fair:
We’re never asked to give more than we’ve been given.

The boy gave all he had for what he had heard
and felt and believed in the wilderness.
And likewise, we can follow the Master’s call
Confident in our connection to the All-good.

May our giving be multiplied
by the divine power to meet the need
and as we have been blessed, so also may we be
part of the blessing for many.
